The Conservation and Design Team

The Conservation and Design Team plays a key role in the management of the historic environment and aims to contribute to the following;

  • Protection and enhancement of the County Borough's built heritage and historic landscapes
  • Raised standards in design quality
  • Development of skills and training initiatives in relation to the built heritage
  • Increase public awareness, knowledge and enjoyment of the historic environment

Officers within the team maintain records and provide guidance on the protection and enhancement of the historic built environment.

The County Borough has Scheduled Ancient Monuments, listed buildings, conservation areas, historic parks and gardens, historic landscapes and buildings of local architectural or historic importance. The team also maintains records of other structures of historic interest including war memorials, mileposts and pill boxes. Guidance and pre application advice is offered by the Conservation and Design Team to owners of historic buildings applicants and agents in ine with current legislation and national guidance relating to the historic built environment and Bridgend County Borough Council Policy Documents including the Unitary Development Plan, adopted Supplementary Planning Guidance and the emerging Built Heritage Strategy.

 Conservation and Design, work in partnership with colleagues in Regeneration and reach (Rural Development Programme)to explore opportunities for projects and funding that will preserve and enhance significant historic assets and areas whilst increasing awareness, knowledge and enjoyment of these assets by building owners, residents and visitors.

The team also runs a Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) Programme in Maesteg and Bridgend which is an historic buildings grant scheme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and Bridgend County Borough Council.

If you would like more information on matters relating to listed buildings, or if you are concerned about an issue which in your view is having a detrimental affect on a conservation area, we welcome your views.

A limited number of listed/historic buildings may qualify for a grant to aid repair work but this is not automatic.
